Former Chicago Bulls player Jay Willams believes Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic could be the dark horse for the Most Valuable Player award of the season. Players like Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Steph Curry are favorites to bag the MVP award but Williams feels the Slovenian is also in the fray.
Doncic, who is playing his fourth NBA season, has been a star performer for Dallas Mavericks and he has played a key role in the success of the franchise. Doncic has been averaging 35 in the last 10 matches for Dallas Mavericks.
Jay Williams said on ESPN’s morning show Get up, “I think Luka Dončić is a dark horse for the MVP. I know Joel Embiid, I know Nikola Jokic, I know Giannis is in that conversation, but you can actually make a case for Luka in his last 10 games averaging 35, 12 and 10. They have the same record as the Philadelphia 76ers and you talk about how he finishes down the stretch.”
In fact, Doncic has struggled to get going in the ongoing season in the early stages of the edition due to injury woes. However, the talisman has been able to bounce back stronger in the last month and he has significantly improved his performances.
Courtesy of his fine performances in the last 10 games, Luka Dončić became the 4th player in NBA history (Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Walt Bellamy) with multiple 45-point, 15-rebound, 5-assist games in a calendar month and the 1st since Wilt Chamberlain in January 1966.
Dončić is averaging 27.5 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9 assists this season. Furthermore, he is shooting the ball better than 33% from beyond the arc and almost 45% from the field. The linchpin is shooting more than 73% from the line. The 22-year old has registered nine triple-doubles and 30 double-doubles.
In fact, Luka Doncic has missed 15 matches in the ongoing season and Dallas Mavericks have gone 6-9 without him. Mavericks will next face Utah Jazz on Friday.
