As the IPL 2024 auction approaches, cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has weighed in on potential choices for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), suggesting Travis Head as a valuable acquisition, especially as an alternative or backup for Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order.
With a substantial purse of ₹29.10 crore remaining for PBKS, Chopra outlined potential recruits, including Travis Head, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Shardul Thakur, emphasising the team’s possible needs and strategies.
“You can look towards Azmatullah Omarzai. You can play him in place of Sam Curran. I feel he (Omarzai) will do better than him (Curran). You can keep Travis Head. If you feel you need an option or backup for Jonny Bairstow, why not Travis Head? Lord Thakur is available if you need an Indian bowler and batter.”
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the need for PBKS to reinforce their middle and lower-middle order, particularly in the absence of Shahrukh Khan, released during the retention process. Contemplating the potential reacquisition of Shahrukh Khan at a more reasonable price, Chopra posed the question, “What will they gain if they bring Shahrukh back?”
Addressing the spin department, Chopra identified a possible deficiency, suggesting the addition of an Indian spinner to augment the team’s bowling resources. Expressing concerns about the spin department’s depth, he recommended a shopping spree for spinners, highlighting Rahul Chahar’s role as a primary spinner, supported by Harpreet Brar and Sikandar Raza.
Chopra proposed Michael Bracewell and Wanindu Hasaranga as potential overseas spin-bowling options, recognizing the need for an off-spinner in the team. However, he acknowledged the challenge of accommodating overseas players, considering the strong contenders for the limited overseas slots, including Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada, and Nathan Ellis.
The IPL 2024 auction, scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, holds promise for PBKS, presenting an opportunity to reinforce their squad with strategic acquisitions. As the auction approaches, the Punjab Kings’ potential selections remain under scrutiny, leaving fans and experts curious about the final composition of the team.
