Asia Cup 2022: I want to learn from it – Virat Kohli on going through a rough patch

There hasn’t been an International player, except the great Sir Don Bradman, who hasn’t gone through a rough patch during his career. The Indian talismanic batsman Virat Kohli is also experiencing the same in his current phase of career.

Kohli hasn’t hit a century for almost three years now and there was a time in his career when he was scoring them for fun. The right-hander hasn’t been able to convert his starts in the white-ball format and his form in the red-ball version has also considerably dipped.

Kohli admitted that one can not run this far in his career without going through such situations. The last time when Kohli suffered such a dip in form was the 2014 England tour when James Anderson had his number. Kohli admitted that one can not run this far in his career without going through such situations. The last time when Kohli suffered such a dip in form was the 2014 England tour when James Anderson had his number. However, that was only one series and Kohli was still not a giant in the game that he is today.

The right-hander has dominated the cricket world since then. He has been consistent for almost a decade now and there is no doubt that he will bounce back to his best in the upcoming matches. Kohli holds the key for the Indian team in the forthcoming Asia Cup and also the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli said on Star Sports show “Game Plan”: “I know where my game stands and you cannot run this far in your international career without having the ability to counter situations and counter conditions and counter different kinds of bowling.

“So, this for me, is an easier phase to process, but I don’t want to put this phase behind me. I want to learn from it and I want to understand what are the core values that I have, as a sportsperson and as a human being.”

Kohli is confident that he will learn from this phase and he will bounce back stronger from the ongoing rut.

“As long as I’m ticking those boxes, I know there are ups and downs, and when I come out of this phase, I know how consistent I can be. My experiences are sacred to me. Whatever I have experienced in this phase or in the past, as well one thing that I can vouch for, is that I have never valued myself more as a person.”

Kohli went on to add that he is batting well in the nets and he feels he wasn’t doing the same on the tour of England, where he could not get going in any of the series despite getting off to starts.

“What happened in England was a pattern, so something that I could work on and something that I had to kind of overcome. Right now, as you rightly mentioned, there is nothing that you can point out saying that the problem is happening here.

“So, that for me, is actually an easier thing to process because I know that I’m batting well and at times, when I start feeling that rhythm back, then I know that I’m batting well.”

He added: “So, that for me is not an issue, which wasn’t the case in England; I didn’t feel like I was batting well at all. So, I had to work hard on one thing that could be exposed again and again which I overcame; right now this is not the case.”

Kohli will be in action in the Asia Cup clash against Pakistan on August 28.
