Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has put his weight behind Deepak Chahar to be selected for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. Gavaskar believes Chahar’s ability to move the new ball both ways will be of great significance to the team.
Meanwhile, Chahar recently made a return to International cricket against Zimbabwe after a long layoff of six months after recovering from a hamstring injury. Chahar then replaced Avesh Khan in the Asia Cup squad after the latter was ruled out due to illness.
“I would say Deepak Chahar. He is the one I would certainly look at because it will be Australia and there will be extra bounce. And with the kind of movement that he generates with the new ball. He is somebody who’s got to factor in if…you know we’ve always picked about 4-5 bowlers for the Australia or South Africa tour and one if them gets wasted. But in a fast-paced tournament like the T20 I think to go with Deepak Chahar would be beneficial for the Indian team,” Sunil Gavaskar said on India Today.
Meanwhile, the fast bowler from Rajasthan hasn’t played consistently in the recent past and it may go against him. Furthermore, India is expected to pick one between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar for the T20I showpiece as both of them are similar types of bowlers as they are known to swing the ball. As Kumar has all the experience under his belt, he may be given a nod ahead of Chahar.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma recently said that 80-90% of their team is set and there will be a couple of changes for the T20 World Cup.
“There is still about two-and-a-half months left for the T20 World Cup. Before that, we have two home series against Australia and South Africa. So, more or less 80-90 percent of your team is set, of course, there could be three-four changes if at all depending on the conditions,” Indian captain Rohit Sharma said after India’s Asia Cup ouster.
India has a lot of bowling options and it has been reported that Harshal Patel and gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah are all set to return for the T20 World Cup after recovering from their respective injuries.
India’s next T20I assignment is three-match series against Australia.
