India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is on the cusp of breaking Kapil Dev’s record. Bumrah has thus far scalped 95 wickets in 22 Test matches as he has got off to a dream start to his red-ball career.
The right-arm fast bowler needs another five more wickets to complete 100 Test matches and become the fastest Indian bowler to take a complete century of wickets in the multi-day format.
Kapil Dev had achieved the same milestone in 25 Test matches and thus Bumrah has two Test matches to break the former World Cup-winning captain record. Bumrah can also leapfrog Venkatesh Prasad (95) and Manof Prabhakar (96) tally in the Test arena.
Bumrah had a mundane World Test Championship final against New Zealand as he went wicketless but he was able to turn the tables in the first Test match against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham as he scalped a total of nine wickets.
Subsequently, Bumrah once again went wicketless in the first innings of the Lord’s Test but he was able to deliver with the bat in the second innings as he scored an unbeaten knock of 34 runs and added 89 runs with Mohammed Shami. Bumrah was sledged by James Anderson, Jos Buttler and Mark Wood and he came out all guns blazing in the second dig as he snared three wickets.
Bumrah has bowled with an impressive average of 22.62 and he has shown the skills to go a long way in his career. The 27-year old from Ahmedabad is ticking the right boxes in his bowling and he has certainly improved his batting.
India won the second Test match at Lord’s by 151 runs and Bumrah had played a key role in the second innings. The third Test match will take place at Leeds, Headingley from 25th August.
