Glenn Maxwell Eyes Test Cricket Return, Banks on Subcontinent Record

Glenn Maxwell remains hopeful of a Test cricket return, aiming to leverage his exceptional record in the subcontinent to earn a recall for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour in early 2025.

The subcontinent has been a fruitful ground for Maxwell’s cricketing prowess, having played all seven of his Tests against South Asian teams. His Test century was scored in India, and his recent instrumental role in Australia’s 50-over World Cup victory in the subcontinent adds weight to his aspirations.

Despite not featuring in Test cricket since September 2017, Maxwell acknowledges the formidable competition within Australia’s Test squad, recognizing the team’s exceptional form as the reigning World Test Champions.

“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test Champions,” Maxwell shared in an interview with Australian radio station SEN.

Acknowledging the limited opportunities in the current Australian Test setup, the 35-year-old all-rounder remains pragmatic, looking ahead to the prospect of filling a role during the upcoming subcontinent tour in 2025.

“There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” Maxwell expressed.

Amid his ambitions for a Test comeback, Maxwell focuses on his performance in the Big Bash League, aiming to showcase his explosive batting and strategic off-spin.

Expressing a tinge of regret for not featuring in the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan, Maxwell reminisced about his time playing first-class cricket in Australia and his desire to contribute in the Test arena.

“It would have been nice to play one at home, it’s where I played all my first-class cricket, and it felt like I toiled away for a few years there… But circumstances and timing I probably was more preferred in the white-ball area,” Maxwell reflected.

With aspirations to reignite his Test career, Maxwell remains optimistic, banking on his past successes in the subcontinent as he sets his sights on making a comeback in the longer format of the game.
