India’s wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel was delighted to contribute to the team’s success after the hosts won against England by five wickets at Ranchi to take an impregnable lead of 3-1 in the series. Jurel said he tries to play according to the demands of the match situation.
The right-hander scored a gutsy knock of 90 runs in the first innings when the home team had their backs against the wall. India was 177-7 but Jurel added a crucial alliance of 76 runs with Kuldeep Yadav to reduce the deficit between the two teams. Jurel added more runs with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj to take India’s first innings total of 307, thereby reducing the gap between the two teams to 46 runs.
Meanwhile, Jurel joined forces with Shubman Gill with India at 120-5 while chasing 192 runs in the second innings. Jurel scored an unbeaten knock of 39 runs and added 72 runs with Gill, who scored 52. Ergo, Jurel was awarded Player of the Match for his fine knocks in both innings.
Jurel said in the post-match presentation, “I play according to the demands of the situation. In the 1st innings, we needed to get runs as well, we knew we had to bat last, so any runs would be vital. I was involved in some partnerships, so credit does go to all those who stayed and added runs. I just saw the ball and then reacted to it, not thinking too far ahead. The conversation was good (with Shubman Gill in the 2nd innings), we just broke it into 10-run sets and started developing the partnership.”
Jurel has been a massive find for the Indian team and he has done a fine job in the last two Test matches. The right-hander had also scored 46 runs on debut at Rajkot. Furthermore, he has been terrific behind the stumps.
The fifth and final Test match will be played at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala from March 7.
