Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja feels all the newcomers are ready to grab their opportunities in the ongoing Test series against England. With KL Rahul being ruled out, Indian selectors added Devdutt Padikkal to the squad.
Padikkal has scored 2227 runs in 31 first-class matches at an average of 44.54. The left-hander has been in terrific form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, scoring 556 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 92.66 and thus he was rewarded by the selectors for his consistent performances.
Furthermore, Rajat Patidar made his Test debut in Vizag. With Shreyas Iyer also ruled out of the series due to a back injury, India could hand a debut to Sarfaraz Khan.
Khan has amassed 3912 runs at an average of 69.85 in 45 first-class games and recently scored a fine knock of 161 runs off just 160 balls against England Lions in the second unofficial Test for India A. Thus, he has consistently delivered for Mumbai in the domestic circuit.
“All these new boys have been playing First-Class cricket regularly, pakke pakkaya players hai. Kabhi na kabhi ye time aana hi tha (They were all ready, India call-up was inevitable). Its good for them to start their career on home soil,” Jadeja said during the pre-match press conference in Rajkot
Meanwhile, Jadeja will make his return from injury. The all-rounder is India’s best fielder and said he always has to be in the hot spots in the field.
“Body will return to rhythm after playing for one-two days,” Jadeja said of his injury. “Lots of cricket is being played these days. I can’t hide in the field. I am always in a hot spot. The team also expects that from me. I am happy to do that. Yes, I have to be careful but that can’t be managed.”
The third Test match between India and England will be played at Rajkot from 15th February onwards.
