Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra was perplexed to note that Sunrisers Hyderabad didn’t bat Jonny Bairstow in the Super Over against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Sunday.
Bairstow had scored a quickfire knock of 38 runs off just 18 balls and had timed the ball to perfection.
However, SRH decided to back David Warner and Kane Williamson in the Super Over. Warner was run-out after scoring six runs and couldn’t get going in the Super Over. On the other hand, Kane Willamson had done a fine job in helping SRH level the scores after he scored a fine unbeaten knock of 66 runs from 51 balls.
Meanwhile, SRH could only manage seven runs in the Super Over, which was bowled by Axar Patel. Furthermore, Warner ran one run short, which made a lot of difference as Delhi also could only manage eight runs to win by the skin of their teeth.
“I was thinking that Bairstow will come in the Super over. Why would you not play him with Kane Williamson? He was sitting outside. Warner was not able to hit the ball and there were two dot balls,” said Chopra on his YouTube Channel.
“They scored eight runs in total and there was a short run. That is the problem as DC would have got to chase nine runs and the match might have gone to another Super Over,” added Chopra.
On the other hand, Kane Williamson showed his class on a difficult Chennai pitch but he didn’t get the support from the other end in the middle-overs. Jagadeesha Suchith, who was playing his maiden match for SRH, scored a crucial cameo of 6-ball 14 to help Williamson.
“Bairstow was unbelievable but Warner got run out and you know what happens when the captain is run out. Bairstow scored 38 runs off just 18 balls but got a little too excited because he had hit Avesh for a terrific shot off the previous delivery,” said Chopra.
“Kane is outstanding but someone needs to play with him. Virat, Kedar, Abhishek, Vijay Shankar – I mean this is a procession of sorts. Hyderabad has given chances to so many people but things are not working out for the team. Jagadeesha Suchith did change a lost match in his team’s favor at the end,” signed off Chopra.
SRH will next play CSK at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on 28th April.
