Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has put his weight behind MS Dhoni to help Chennai Super Kings in turning the tables in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Ravindra Jadeja decided to relinquish the captaincy duties on Saturday and MS Dhoni will now once again lead the franchise for the rest of the season.
Dhoni had handed over the captaincy reins to Ravindra Jadeja before the start of the season. But as the all-rounder could not lead from the front, he wanted to focus on his own individual performance. Jadeja has only scored 112 runs in eight matches and picked only five wickets for CSK in the ongoing season.
Meanwhile, Sehwag has seen MS Dhoni’s captaincy from close quarters while playing for the national team. Former Delhi batter added that India started winning from difficult situations under the leadership of MS Dhoni and he took the team to new great heights.
Dhoni always led from the front and delivered as a finisher, wicket-keeper, and also as a leader while playing for Team India.
On the other hand, Chennai has only managed two wins from their eight matches in the ongoing season of the IPL as they have failed to come up with a collective show. With six league stage matches remaining for the four-time champions, the MS Dhoni-led team will need to win all of them to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the playoff stages.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, “I have been with that man since 2005 and I have seen Indian cricket change under him. We used to lose the games we had under control and under his captaincy, we won games in which we were on the brink of losing. We had never thought that we’ll travel to Australia and beat them 2-0 in two finals of the triangular tournament [Commonwealth Bank Series] and we won that in 2008. Especially, after we were beaten in the Test series.
“After that, we won several ICC knockouts, home series under him, the ones which we used to lose before but they turned into victories. So keeping that in mind, I am saying that it can happen [CSK winning 6 games in a row],” Sehwag further added.
Dhoni was re-appointed as the CSK captain on Saturday after the franchise released an official statement.
“Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game and has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK,” the franchise said in a statement.
“MS Dhoni has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest and to allow Jadeja to focus on his game,” it added.
There is no doubt that Chennai Super Kings will believe again with MS Dhoni re-appointed as a leader as he has bailed his team out of the jail on many occasions.
