It would be unfair to change captain just 3-4 months before T20 World Cup: Deep Dasgupta

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Deep Dasgupta feels it would be unfair to change captain just 3-4 months before the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli’s captaincy has come under the scanner after the Indian team lost the World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

Kohli is yet to lead India to a major ICC title and the pressure is mounting on him. India lost the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, lost the semifinal of the 2019 World Cup and then lost the WTC Final against the Kiwis. Thus, the upcoming T20 World Cup will be crucial for the future of Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

India has an option of handing the captaincy baton to Rohit Sharma in limited overs format as he has a fantastic record. Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to five titles in Indian Premier League and he is known to keep his calm under crunch situations.

Meanwhile, Deep Dasgupta added that every captain has a different style of captaincy and it takes some time for the team to get used to the captaincy style of other captain.

Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube Channel, “I won’t say ‘high time’ but I would say Rohit is definitely an option. I think a lot will depend on the T20 World Cup because as of now it’s very difficult. You have just 3-4 months ahead of you, you will change the captaincy, which will mean that the team will have to align with the style of the new captain.

“Even though Rohit has led the side before, there’s a difference between a stand-in skipper and a full-time skipper because as the former you don’t want to make too many changes. When you are a full-time skipper, obviously, you want to make changes because you want to run the team your way,” Dasgupta said.

“I believe it will be unfair on Rohit, the team, and also on Virat now just 3-4 months before [the World Cup]. But I think the T20 World Cup will be very, very important in that aspect, because if something goes wrong there then Rohit is one of the main contenders for that spot.”

There is no doubt that Virat Kohli is under the pump to deliver a big trophy as India last won Champions Trophy back in 2013 under MS Dhoni. India has been consistent in the big events but they haven’t been able to go all the way and have crumbled at the final hurdle.
