Jos Buttler should be RCB’s new captain, has it in him to be like MS Dhoni: Michael Vaughan

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has put his weight behind Jos Buttler to be Royal Challengers Bangalore’s new captain for IPL 2022. Virat Kohli has decided to relinquish himself from captaincy duties and RCB’s think tank will seek a new leader for the next season.

Buttler is currently England’s vice-captain and he could be considered as one of the options for RCB’s leadership role. The English wicket-keeper batter is currently with Rajasthan Royals and RCB could look to rope in the mega auction of IPL 2022 if the former decides not to retain their talisman player.

Buttler has an impeccable record in the IPL as he has scored 1968 runs in 65 matches at an impressive average of 35.14 and a whirlwind strike rate of 150. Vaughan feels Buttler can be like MS Dhoni, who is one of the most successful captains in the IPL.

“I will throw you a name. This name is out of the box because he’s from another franchise and they may retain him, but I would choose Jos Buttler to go there and be the captain. He’s got it in him to be like MS Dhoni. I have no doubt about him,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

“He’s been playing for the England side under Eoin Morgan. Tactically very astute. Again, I don’t know what Rajasthan are thinking of doing with him. But I would personally take Buttler to the RCB camp, put him behind the stumps and ask him to captain,” he said.

Vaughan added that RCB will need a strong leader to manage a player like Virat Kohli. Buttler has all the experience under his belt and he can do the job for RCB if he is roped in by the franchise.

“It’s just that, who’s got the character and personality to go in there and captain Virat Kohli. That’s got to be a skillful person, who knows himself, knows T20 cricket, knows how to manage people and particularly someone like Virat Kohli. Once you were the captain, now you are just in the ranks and be that senior player,” Vaughan added.

“Those senior players who have been captain, even though they are always saying, ‘I’ll just jump back in the dressing room and be a foot-soldier once again’. It’s always difficult (to do that) so they’re going to need a very skillful man-manager to go in there and captain RCB,” said Vaughan.

It will be interesting to note how RCB will shape up for the next season.
