Former India captain Anil Kumble has lauded KL Rahul’s remarkable comeback following a serious hamstring injury. Rahul’s sensational performance against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 has garnered widespread acclaim, and Kumble highlighted how the time off had benefited him.
India’s ODI World Cup campaign got off to a strong start with a six-wicket victory against Australia, thanks in large part to Rahul’s brilliant innings. He entered the fray at No. 4, partnering with Virat Kohli (85) when India were struggling at 2/3. Their partnership of 167 runs marked the highest fourth-wicket stand in ODI history. Rahul remained unbeaten on 97 off 115 deliveries, including eight boundaries and two sixes.
Kumble commended Rahul’s game awareness and resilience in difficult phases. He said, “Yes, I think you know, Certainly the time off has helped him. And it’s what has been impressive has been his game awareness and also the toughness to sort of go through those phases and be consistent.”
The former captain added that Rahul’s Chennai innings was the best he had seen from the wicketkeeper-batter in the last few months. “Yes. In the last couple of months? Yes, brilliant batting from KL.”
Rahul had faced a setback due to a severe hamstring injury sustained during a Lucknow Super Giants’ IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in May 2023. He underwent surgery for his right thigh, sidelining him from the game for a considerable period.
However, his return to cricket in the Asia Cup 2023 was nothing short of remarkable. He played a pivotal role in India’s success, scoring an unbeaten 111* against Pakistan in the Super Four stage, helping India reach a total of 356 runs. Rahul’s comeback continued with impressive performances in the ODI series against Australia leading up to the World Cup, where he showcased his skill and resilience.
