Mohammed Shami says he is focused to keep performing, leaves selection to selectors

India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami said he is focused on performing well in the domestic circuit and added that the rest is up to the selectors. Shami is currently the third-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing Ranji Trophy as he has scalped 15 wickets in two matches for Bengal at an impressive average of 10.47.

The Bengal pacer returned with figures of 3-44 and 5-38 in the Ranji Trophy clash against Gujarat and played a key role in his team’s 141-run win.

Shami had also scalped seven wickets in the opening game against Uttarakhand and was awarded Player of the Match.

“A lot of hard work is there and I believe luck too plays a part. Every person wants to play for the country. So, I am ready for that (again). My motivation is to stay fit and be available for the Indian team at all times,” Shami told the media after the Gujarat encounter.

“In the ground, I will continue to perform and the rest is on the selectors’ hands. It is a relief. Mentally, physically, it feels very good, because you are coming back from such a difficult time (injury) and you stay on the ground after that,” Shami added.

Shami squashed reports of any rift with chief selector Ajit Agarkar and said he is available to play all three formats.

“I am always involved in some controversy, thanks to you guys (laughs). It is a misunderstanding,” Shami said.

Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy but he has failed to get regular chances. The Bengal pacer had an incredible run in the 2023 ODI World Cup, picking 24 wickets in seven matches but he was ruled out of action after suffering an ankle injury. Subsequently, Shami remained on the sidelines as he faced issues with his knee.
