Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene has said that Indian cricketer, Rohit Sharma might be an instinctive captain, but he weighs all his decisions carefully after studying opponents thoroughly.
Rohit is the current captain of the Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise in the India Premier League (IPL) The club is a four-time winner of the cash-rich league.
Speaking on ‘Sony Ten Pit Stop’ show aired on Sony Sports Instagram page, the coach described the Indian batsman as an intuitive leader, adding that he gathers a lot of information as well, which he said is his strength. Therefore, Mahela admitted that he likes India’s white-ball vice-captain information-gathering ability.
Mahela, who calls the Vice-captain Ro, also pointed out that apart from the fact that the batsman does get a lot of information about the opponents, he also likes to know things. This, he said, Rohit uses in the middle.
The coach says after gathering the information, he is instinctive on the pitch as everyone sees him reacting to them when making the calls.
Apart from getting the needed information, Mahela noted that Rohit’s inquisitive mind also shows how much he thinks about the game and understand it.
He further explained that the Mumbai captain comes to ask questions and sometimes walk into the team room to do analysis. This is where he said Rohit is seen as an analyst, after looking through certain stuff. He also said Rohit gets those little snippets from his teammates, and he is always prepared.
The former Sri Lanka captain, therefore, pointed out that it’s the preparation that helps build an instinct. This, he also noted helps Rohit to instinctively make those calls and being proactive. The Sri Lankan batting great described him as a great lad in that aspect.
