Afghanistan talisman leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been named as the T20I skipper of the national team, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced on Tuesday. Khan replaces former skipper Asghar Afghan and the leg-spinner will now lead the team in the T20 World Cup, all set to be played in the UAE.
Furthermore, Najibullah Zadran has been named as Afghanistan’s vice-captain in the shortest format of the game. Meanwhile, Khan had earlier led Afghanistan from September 2019 to December 2019 in which he took the team to seven wins in 16 matches.
However, he was replaced by Asghar Afghan, whom he had replaced earlier. However, Afghan was once again sacked by ACB after a gap of 15 months.
Meanwhile, the ace spinner was earlier reluctant to take the leadership role and was afraid that the captaincy duties might impact his personal performances.
Rashid Khan had said earlier while talking to ESPN Cricinfo, “I am afraid it might affect my performance.”
On the other hand, Rashid Khan is one of the best spinners in the shortest format of the game and he has bamboozled the best batsmen in the game. Khan has scalped a total of 95 wickets at a brilliant average of 12.63 and a parsimonious economy rate of 6.21 and an amazing strike rate of 12.1.
Meanwhile, the leg-spinner had expressed confidence that the team will do well irrespective of who leads the team as everyone knows their respective roles.
“As a team, it doesn’t really affect us a lot as we all know our roles. We know someone will be named captain at some time but at the same time, we all know what our job is and what our responsibility is to the team. We never thought a lot about the captaincy because it’s all about us as a team and what we are putting in at the ground.”
