Ricky Ponting Reveals He Declined Offer To Be England Coach

Ricky Ponting, the Australian cricket legend, has seamlessly transitioned between coaching roles and commentary since retiring as a player. Currently commentating in the ongoing Ashes, Ponting’s expertise and insights have been invaluable to fans and fellow cricket enthusiasts alike.

During his coaching stints, Ponting made a significant impact on various teams. In 2014, he was appointed as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, and his tenure lasted until 2016. Under his guidance, the team clinched the IPL title in 2015, showcasing Ponting’s exceptional coaching abilities. Later, in IPL 2018, Ponting joined the Delhi Capitals as their head coach, and the franchise’s fortunes changed dramatically thereafter.

Although the Delhi Capitals have yet to secure a championship, Ponting’s influence has propelled them to new heights. In 2020, the team reached the IPL finals for the first time, a testament to Ponting’s strategic expertise. Beyond the Indian Premier League, Ponting also takes on the role of head of strategy with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and knowledgeable cricketing mind.

Recently, the former Australian captain revealed an interesting proposition he received from Robert Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket team. Key approached Ponting for the position of England’s red-ball coach, but Ponting ultimately declined the offer. His decision stemmed from his desire to prioritize family and minimize prolonged separations caused by international coaching commitments. Instead, England proceeded with Brendon McCullum, whose appointment has since made a significant impact on the team’s playing style.

Ponting explained his thought process, stating, “Having traveled as much as I have, with young kids now, I just don’t want to be away as much as I was. When you’ve got kids that are in school, moving them around, that’s not what I want to do.” His choice to prioritize family over professional opportunities showcases his admirable commitment to his loved ones.

In a separate incident, Ollie Robinson, an English pacer, found himself embroiled in controversy during the first Test. Robinson’s on-field antics, including arguments with Usman Khawaja and an aggressive send-off, drew criticism from various quarters. Seeking to justify his actions, Robinson referred to the aggressive nature of Ponting and his teammates during their battles against England.

Ponting, however, took offense at being dragged into the controversy and issued a warning to Robinson. He advised the young pacer to concentrate on his own game rather than concerning himself with the past. Ponting confidently remarked, “If he is sitting back thinking about me, then no wonder he bowled the way he did in that game, if he’s worried about what I did 15 years ago… if you’re going to talk to Australian cricketers in an Ashes series, then you want to be able to back it up with your skills.”

As the Ashes series unfolds, Ponting’s presence in the commentary box and his unwavering passion for the sport continue to inspire fans worldwide. His multifaceted career as a player, coach, and commentator has solidified his status as one of cricket’s most respected and influential figures. Whether he is sharing his strategic insights or providing analysis on the game, Ricky Ponting remains an iconic figure within the cricketing fraternity.
