Rohit Sharma has become the first Indian batter to score 1000 ODI runs against Australia while batting Down Under in the 50-overs format. The former Indian skipper needed two runs to reach the 1000-run mark before the second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Thursday.
Rohit struggled to get going initially but he was able to show resistance after getting settled at the crease. The Indian opener scored 73 runs off 97 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. Rohit was dismissed by Mitchell Starc when he was looking to play a pull shot but was caught by Josh Hazlewood at deep fine leg.
After Rohit struggled to get going against the Australian bowlers in the Powerplay overs, Irfan Pathan noted that he has never seen Rohit struggle so much.
Pathan wrote on X, “Never seen Rohit sharma got beaten or struggled so much but this half century should give him much needed confidence.”
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer scored an impressive knock of 61 runs off 77 balls with the help of seven fours. Axar Patel, who was once again promoted to number five, scored a decent knock of 44 runs off 41 balls. But India’s lower-middle order could not add the finishing touches as the visitors posted 264 runs on the board after they were put into bat.
Australia are 42-1 after 10 overs in the run-chase.
Meanwhile, former legendary West Indies batter Sir Vivian Richards played 40 ODIs against Australia in their country and amassed a total of 1905 runs, which is the highest for any batter.
