Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly reckons Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. Recently, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit will lead India in the T20I showpiece.
Rohit recently made a comeback to the T20I format in the three-match series against Afghanistan after a long hiatus of 14 months.
In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav led India in the shortest format of the game. However, when Rohit was named captain for the series against Afghanistan with Pandya and SKY being on the sidelines due to their respective injuries, it was an indication that India’s full-time captain would take over the captaincy baton for the T20I showpiece.
Meanwhile, Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to five titles in the IPL, which is the joint-most along with CSK captain MS Dhoni.
Ganguly said India ticked the right boxes in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they won 10 matches on the bounce but could not cross the last hurdle against Australia.
“Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice,” Ganguly told mid-day.
On the other hand, Jay Shah is optimistic that India will end their ICC major title hoodoo under Rohit Sharma as he predicted the team will go on to win the upcoming T20 World Cup.
“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I would like to say that I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Shah said during an event at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot last week.
“Rohit was captaining (in the past and in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series after a year, which means we were going to let him continue forward,” he added.
India will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland.
