Rohit Sharma unsure of his T20I career, unlikely to participate in ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is unsure of his T20I career and he is unlikely to take part in the T20 World Cup 2024, as per the reports. Rohit played his last T20I against England in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup, which India lost.

Since then Hardik Pandya has been leading the national team in the shortest format of the game. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma’s ODI captaincy future will also be decided soon, after India could not go all the way in the World Cup as they lost the final against Australia despite dominating the whole tournament.

Rohit has scored 3853 runs in 148 T20I matches at an average of 30.82 and a strike rate of 139.25.

On the other hand, Rohit scored 597 runs in 11 matches of the World Cup 2023 at an average of 54.27 and a blistering strike rate of 125.95. The talisman scored three fifties and one century in the ODI showpiece and thus played a key role in taking India to the final of the tournament as he batted with an aggressive approach.

“It is not a new development. Rohit hasn’t played any T20Is in past one year as the focus was on ODI World Cup. He had extensive discussions with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in this regard. He has himself volunteered to stay away from T20Is. It has completely been Rohit’s call,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were brilliant for India in the ODI World Cup. While Shami ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps in seven matches, Bumrah bagged 20 wickets in 11 games. The source added that Bumrah is looking forward to returning to the Test team.

“Bumrah is fighting fit and results were there for everyone to see. He is back at his peak fitness and is itching to play the Test matches. With Bumrah and Shami, you need to use them based on what is the priority format at a given time. Bumrah will certainly play T20 World Cup if all goes well,” the BCCI source added.

Suryakumar Yadav will lead against Australia in a five-match T20I series.
