Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar has backed Shubman Gill to break Rohit Sharma’s record for the highest score in ODIs. Sharma had scored a magnum opus knock of 264 runs against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2014, which is the highest score in the 50-over version.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has the highest score of 208 runs in ODIs, which he scored against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 2023. Bangar reckons if Gill can bat for 45-46 overs, he can break Rohit Sharma’s record in the 50-overs format.
Gill has an outstanding record in ODIs, scoring 2787 runs in 55 matches at an impressive average of 59.04 and a strike rate of 99.57.
Bangar said on the Great Indian Cricket show on Doordarshan when asked who could break Rohit Sharma’s record, “Shubman Gill has also scored a double hundred in one-day cricket. So, he has tasted it. And if Shubman Gill plays 45-46 overs, I think he can break the record.”
Gill is currently leading India in a two-match Test series against the West Indies.
On the other hand, the former Indian all-rounder believes Abhishek Sharma can break his mentor Yuvraj Singh’s record of the joint fastest T20I half-century. Yuvraj had scored a fifty off just 12 balls against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup at Durban
Bangar explained: “He is his student. And he hits sixes in the same way.”
Abhishek was the star of the show in the Asia Cup, amassing 314 runs in seven games at a blistering strike rate of 200. Thus, he was awarded Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances in the continental competition.
