India was already without the services of Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami in the second Test match due to their respective injuries whereas Virat Kohli missed the first two Test matches due to personal reasons.
A source said as reported by Indian Express, “Iyer has informed the Indian team management and the medical staff that his back gets stiff after playing more than 30 balls and he feels pain in his groin while playing forward defence. Post surgery, he is facing this issue for the first time so he has been advised to rest for a few weeks. He will head to NCA later.”
Meanwhile, Iyer returned with scores of 35 and 13 in the opening Test match against England at Hyderabad. Furthermore, he could only manage 27 and 29 in the second Test match at Vizag and thus failed to convert his starts into substantial scores. However, Iyer added a crucial alliance of 81 runs with Shubman Gill in the second innings.
Iyer has scored 811 runs in 14 Test matches at an average of 36.86 and he hasn’t been consistent in the recent past.
On the other hand, KL Rahul is expected to get back into the squad after missing the second Test match due to quadriceps pain whereas Jadeja might miss out as he hasn’t recovered from a hamstring injury. In Rahul’s absence, Rajat Patidar made his debut but failed to grab his opportunities with both hands.
The third Test match between India and England will be played at Rajkot from 15th February onwards.
