Shubman Gill shares interesting anecdotes about The Gabba Test and why he doesn’t take the strike for the first ball

The series against Australia was particularly memorable to India’s newest batting sensation Shubman Gill. The youngster made a clear mark on the team and battled the lethal and dangerous Australian pace attack extremely well. Shubman also scored a mighty impressive 91 in the final innings, which helped India chase down Australia’s target and secure a historic win where no other team had won before in almost 30 years.

He looked set to score his maiden Test ton in his debut Test series but in the end, ended up falling a prey to Nathan Lyon after a bad shot. Shubman Gill revealed that his father was particularly disappointed in the manner that he had gotten out and that he was gutted about it as well.

“To be honest, I really wanted to score a century and see my team through. Honestly, very very disappointed at the way I got out and he (Gill’s father) also told me the same thing that you should have got a century. I was pretty disappointed and I can see he is also disappointed, but the good thing that was we want the Test match. If we would have drawn or loss, it would have been even more devastating,” Gill said on The Grade Cricketer.

Gill also shed light on why he will never take the strike again while opening in a Test match.

“Never! (if he will ever take the strike on the first ball) I remember in my debut innings that Mayank was kind enough to say ‘Okay, I know you are under pressure so I will take the strike’ and he took the strike in both innings. And then in the next match, I was supposed to take the strike but Mayank didn’t play, Rohit bhai played (chuckles). Rohit himself said: ‘I know you are a youngster, so I will take the strike.’ From there on, he took the strike every game until that match against England.”

Unfortunately, the 21-year-old got out for a duck in the second Test against England when he decided to take the striker.

“I don’t know why I told him that I will take the strike and obviously, that didn’t work for me, I got out on the 3rd or 4th ball on a duck. But yes, that won’t happen again anytime soon,” Shubman Gill said on The Grade Cricketer’s YouTube channel.
