A study has revealed that India skipper, Virat Kholi is the most popular cricketer in the world.
The SEMrush study further revealed that the Indian cricket team is also the most popular in the world is concerned.
The study revealed that Kohli was searched online an average of 16.2 lakh times per month from January to June 2020, while the Indian team was searched an average of 2.4 lakh times monthly in the same period.
Moreover, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, George Mackay, Josh Richards, Hardik Pandya, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Matthews, and Shreyas Iyer were amongst the top ten cricketers searched during the period stated.
Each cricketer from January to June this year was searched an average of 9.7, 9.4, 9.1, 7.1, 6.7, 5.4, 4.1, and 3.4 lakh times, respectively.
India is followed on the world team by England, Australia, West Indies, and Pakistan, while South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland complete the top ten.
The top 12 teams where Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe, occupied number 11 and 12 respectively were searched 0.66, 0.33, 0.29, 0.23, 0.16, 0.12, 0.12, 0.09, 0.05, 0.04, and 0.03 lakh times per month.
In the women category, Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry, who were not in the top ten, were searched 12th and 20th most times. The duo topped big names like Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan.
Not surprised by the research outcome, Fernando Angulo, Head of Communications, SEMrush, said the company is to find out that Kohli emerged the most searched cricketer and India the most searched cricket team.
But whats surprised him was the case of women cricketers, who are being searched more often than a lot of top-rated men.
This, he said, means that cricket stereotypes as a man-only sport no longer hold as there is considerable enthusiasm about women cricketers now.
He added that there is likely to be more women playing cricket in the future and India, being the most important cricket-playing nation is likely to have many of them.
