Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar reckons Surakumar Yadav can be a great finisher for India in the T20 World Cup 2022. Yadav has been in prolific form in the recent past but he has mostly batted in the middle order for the team.
The right-hander from Mumbai had scored a magnum opus knock of 117 runs off just 55 balls against England in the third T20I but his efforts had gone in vain. Yadav was promoted as an opener in the T20I series against West Indies and had scored 76 runs off just 43 balls in the third game.
The 31-year-old scored a fine knock of 68 runs off just 26 balls against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup but failed to contribute in the Super Four stage.
Yadav can play all around the ground and the fielding restrictions don’t matter to him a lot. Furthermore, the right-hander is known to hit the ground running.
“I can’t really comment on who bats at what number. It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain and the vice-captain. But I feel Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can bat at 5 as well. He can be a great finisher,” Dilip Vengsarkar said while talking to Indian Express.
“T20 is not like ODIs and Test cricket, where you need certain batters at certain positions. In this format, anybody can bat anywhere. You don’t have time to settle down. One should go after the bowlers from ball one,” Vengsarkar added.
Meanwhile, India is expected to back KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav as their top four batters in the T20 World Cup while Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and Dinesh Karthik will take the onus of finishing the innings.
India’s T20 World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh.
