As the Indian team has been knocked out of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021, there have been questions raised on their playing approach.
It has been noticed that India mostly adopts a sedate approach and they don’t bat that aggressively. However, former Indian fast bowler Ajit Agarkar feels there is no need for the team to change their template in T20 cricket.
Agarkar believes it is not a guile call to change something which has worked for the team just because the side lost the two opening matches. Meanwhile, teams like England and Pakistan are playing aggressive cricket and they are reaping rewards for their playing style.
It has been noticed that India lacks a batter in their batting order who can hit the ground running in T20 cricket and bat aggressively from the get-go.
While previewing the contest between India and Namibia for ESPN Cricinfo, Agarkar said: “It’s just that it has been a tournament where India have not played well enough in two games or played up to their capability, if they had, we perhaps would not be questioning their template. I don’t see any reason why India should change their template just because they had two losses.”
On the other hand, former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody also echoed the same thoughts as he feels India’s template in the shortest format of the game is incorrect.
“Coming into the World Cup, India were seen as the deadset favourites with England. So, on the back of a couple of losses, I don’t think their template is incorrect. I think they’ve got it right, they have the skill and the talent. It’s just that they have not executed under pressure in this World Cup.”
It was a disappointing tournament for India as they failed to make it to the semifinal stages. In fact, India was one of the biggest favorites while coming into the T20I showpiece but could not get going in the first two matches against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Virat Kohli will lead the Indian team for the last time in T20Is against Namibia today.
