Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar believes the team doesn’t require a separate batting coach when Rahul Dravid is the head coach of the team. Vikram Rathour is currently the batting coach of the Indian team.
India’s batting did come under the scanner in the T20 World Cup as KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma could not deliver the goods in the PowerPlay overs. The Indian team had a timid Run rate of six in the first six overs in the T20I showpiece and they veered off the track from their aggressive style of batting.
Gavaskar feels the players could get confused if the different coaches have different opinions.
“When you have Rahul Dravid, who is one of the greatest batters of all time, then you don’t need a batting coach. When Rahul Dravid says something and Vikram Rathour says something else, batters will get confused. You have to understand this. If you don’t want too many members in the support staff, don’t send them with the team. Take only those who are necessary,” said Gavaskar while talking to Sports Tak.
The former opener reckons too many voices in the dressing room are creating confusion among the players regarding their role in the team.
“In the 1983 World Cup, we had one manager. Same in 1985. When the team won in 2011, there weren’t many people as well. I’m surprised the number of support staff is higher than the team members. Players get confused on whom to listen,” he added.
Meanwhile, India was knocked out of the T20 World Cup after they suffered an ignominious loss of 10 wickets against England in the semifinal at Adelaide Oval. Apart from Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian batters could not deliver consistently in the T20I showpiece.
On the other hand, Rahul Dravid has been rested for the tour of New Zealand and VVS Laxman will serve as the head coach for the team.
India will take on the Kiwis in the first T20I at Wellington on Friday. Hardik Pandya will lead the team in the three-match T20I series.
