If recent reports were to be believed, Rohit Sharma was all set to replace Virat Kohli as the limited-overs captain after the completion of the T20 World Cup. It was been reported that Kohli wants to concentrate on his batting as he isn’t in the greatest of forms and wants to split the white-ball captaincy with Rohit Sharma.
However, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has quashed all such reports and stated that it is all rubbish that has been created by the media.
The source had told TOI, “Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world.”
However, Dhumal told IANS, ‘’This is all rubbish. Nothing (as) such is happening. This is all that you guys (media) are talking about. BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue (split captaincy). Virat will remain as the captain (of all formats).”
As Rohit Sharma has an incredible record in the IPL, a lot of cricket experts feel the Mumbai batsman should take over the captaincy baton from Virat Kohli in the white-ball format. However, Kohli has been doing a perfect job in all three formats of the game and there seems to be no need to change the captain.
Meanwhile, India is yet to win a major title after MS Dhoni has given up his captaincy. Thus, there is a bit of pressure on Kohli to deliver a big title though his captaincy record in all three formats is second to none. Kohli has a great record in Test matches and has definitely taken Indian cricket to new heights under his regime as the leader.
Kohli is known for his aggressive captaincy and he is known to get the best of his players. Virat will be seen leading Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL whereas Rohit Sharma will captain five-time champions Mumbai Indians.
