Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Parthiv Patel feels Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early in the team’s opening game against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Sunday.
While chasing 200 runs, Kishan threw his hands at a wide delivery from Mitchell Starc but paid no respect to the swing on offer in the opening over. He ended up giving a simple catch to Cameron Green at first slip and was dismissed for a golden duck.
Subsequently, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma got a good delivery from Josh Hazlewood, who got the ball to move back into the right-hander to plumb him in front of the wickets. At 2-2, Shreyas Iyer played an immature shot away from the body and was dismissed without opening his account by Josh Hazlewood.
Thus, the top three Indian batters were dismissed without scoring and India found themselves tottering at 2-3.
“When you are playing on a pitch like this, you need to spend a bit of time. It is not easy to just go out there and play your shots. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer made the mistake of going too hard, too early,” said Patel while talking to Cricbuzz.
“However, it was important to get a good start, and runs could have been scored quickly in the first 10 overs. That must have played in their minds. They will learn from this,” Patel added.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were able to steady the ship as they scored 97 and 85 runs respectively to get their team over the line. The duo added 165 runs for the fourth wicket and batted at the top of their game.
India will be up against Afghanistan in their second game of the ODI showpiece, which will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday.
