World Cup 2023: It is not like I have to go and swing my bat mindlessly – Rohit Sharma on his batting approach

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has revealed that he tries to bat according to the team and the match situation. Rohit, who has all the experience under his belt of opening the innings, has been providing quick starts to his team in the ongoing World Cup.

However, Rohit had to keep his aggressive approach on the back burner against England as India lost three early wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer in the Powerplay Overs. Rohit scored a fine knock of 87 runs off 101 balls and played a key role in helping India post 229 runs on the board.

The talisman has scored 398 runs in six matches at an average of 66.33 and a strike rate of 119.16 in the ongoing World Cup 2023.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Sri Lanka clash, Rohit said, “I am enjoying my batting but obviously keeping in mind the team and the situation. It is not like that I have to go and swing my bat mindlessly – I have to use it (the bat) well, have to play well and get the team in good situations – that is my mindset.”

“The scoreboard is zero when I open, I have to set the tone for the game,” the 36-year-old added. “I have the advantage, you can call it, that I am opening the batting and there is no pressure of (a fallen) wicket. When you have to start you can play fearlessly but then last game we were put under pressure in the Powerplay, we lost three wickets.”

Meanwhile, air pollution in India has been on the rise with crop burning and Diwali on the cards. Rohit himself posted a picture of haze on his social media platform and said they need to look after their future generation.

“In an ideal world, you don’t want a situation like this. I’m pretty sure the concerned people are taking the necessary steps to avoid these kind of situations. But obviously, looking at our future generation, your kids, my kids, obviously, it’s quite important that they get to live without any fear… we have to look after our future generation.”

Rohit Sharma will want to carry the good show for the Indian team and he is going to hold the key at the top of the order. India will next take on Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday.
