Durand Cup Quarter-Finals Line-Up Announced; Kolkata Derby Cancellation Dominates Discussion

The line-up for the quarter-finals of the 133rd IndianOil Durand Cup has been officially announced following a virtual draw conducted by the Local Organizing Committee on Sunday. Representatives from the eight qualified teams participated in the event, which also saw a significant venue change for one of the matches due to concerns over playing conditions.

One of the major talking points leading up to the quarter-finals was the much-anticipated Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal, which was canceled due to security concerns.

The decision to cancel the match was a disappointment to many. As a result, both teams were awarded one point each. Mohun Bagan Super Giant topped their group, thanks to a superior goal difference, while East Bengal secured a quarter-final spot as one of the two best second-placed teams.

In a decision aimed at ensuring optimal playing conditions, the organizers opted to shift the second quarter-final match from Kolkata to Shillong. This decision reflects the organizers’ commitment to player safety and the quality of the tournament.

The quarter-final matchups, scheduled for August 21 and August 23, are as follows:

Quarter-Final 1: Northeast United FC vs Indian Army FT at SAI Stadium, Kokrajhar, on August 21 at 4:00 PM.

Quarter-Final 2: Shillong Lajong FC vs Emami East Bengal FC at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong, on August 21 at 7:00 PM.

Quarter-Final 3: Mohun Bagan Super Giant vs Punjab FC at JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur, on August 23 at 4:00 PM.

Quarter-Final 4: Bengaluru FC vs Kerala Blasters FC at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on August 23 at 7:00 PM.

The road to the quarter-finals was confirmed after the conclusion of the final group-stage match between FC Goa and Shillong Lajong FC in Shillong on Saturday evening. With the group stages complete and the quarter-finalists determined, a live draw was conducted via video call, with team representatives present to finalize the pairings.

This year’s Durand Cup, which kicked off on July 27, 2024, has featured 24 teams, including a guest team from Nepal and all 12 teams from India’s premier football league, the Indian Super League (ISL). The tournament, steeped in history, remains one of the most prestigious football events in India. The final is set to take place on August 31, 2024, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

As the tournament progresses into its final stages, fans across the country eagerly await the high-stakes quarter-final clashes. With powerhouses like Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC in the mix, the coming matches promise to deliver intense competition and memorable moments on the road to the grand finale.
