Belgium’s star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne had suffered a facial fracture in a clash with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger during the Champions League final.
For several days, there was plenty of speculation on whether De Bruyne would be able to make it to the Belgium squad for the European Championship as he had been named in the final squad before suffering the fracture.
However, Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez confirmed recently that Kevin De Bruyne will join the team squad on June 7 ahead of the European Championships this month.
De Bruyne underwent surgery on the fractured eye socket that he suffered during the final of the Champions League and manager Roberto Martinez mentioned that the surgery went well and that the medical staff is satisfied.
“It went very well, very positively. We are looking forward to Monday when he will join our squad. That small intervention was necessary with a view to the long term. He will not need a long recovery,” Goal.com quoted Martinez as saying.
“The operation only took 20 minutes. The medical staff is satisfied with the result. De Bruyne is now doing well, that’s all,” he added.
The 29-year-old suffered a mishap during the final of the Champions League when he ended up fracturing his nose bone and left orbital in an accidental collision with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger. Rudiger even apologized to De Bruyne later and clarified he didn’t mean for that to happen.
Kevin De Bruyne’s night went from bad to worse after his side Manchester City failed to score in the second half and Chelsea ended up winning the title. Guardiola’s side were second best to Chelsea throughout the night and The Blues ended up winning the title in their first final appearance since 2012.
Kevin De Bruyne had cut a frustrating figure in the final even before the injury. He was left in tears and was visibly emotional at the sidelines after his fracture forced him to be substituted off the pitch. In a social media post, De Bruyne mentioned that he is ‘feeling okay’ at the moment but is still disappointed by the loss in the final almost a week ago.
“Hi guys just got back from the hospital. My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back,” Kevin tweeted.
