Indian strikers would have to do more than foreign players if they want to have the recognition that they deserve.
The second-highest goalscorer in the history of the India Super League, Jeje Lalpekhlua, stated this, revealing that the influx of foreign players into the Indian football scene has choked Indian players of chances.
This is also echoing the views of the Indian national team coach, Igor Stimac, about the need for Indian strikers to be trusted more by coaches, albeit Indian strikers must improve.
“Indian strikers have to work harder than other players. If you don’t score soon, it might be a problem because you will be compared to a foreign striker. The club has to give more opportunities to Indian striker ultimately. Maybe, then you will see their performances improve.” Jeje stated on goal.
Due to the lack of opportunities given to the Indian players, the all India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee decided to adopt the 3+1 foreigner rule in the I-League and ISL.
The player showed his support for the rule, as stated by the Asian football confederations.
“I support the four foreigner rule. In every Asian competition, we have the 3+1 system (one foreigner compulsory from an Asian nation). FC Goa, ATK, and Bengaluru FC have to play with four foreigners in the continental competitions. They have to adapt to this in the league as well. I support the rule,” goal quoted Jeje.
While the I-League will adopt the rule from the next season, the ISL will only start adopting the rule in the 2021-2022 season.
Jeje has been out of football for over a year due to a knee injury that needed surgery, and the striker is now undergoing a rehabilitation process.
