Indian Super League outfit Kerala Blasters have already started preparing for the upcoming season. Hence apart from bringing in reinforcements, they are also concentrating on tying their old players to long term contracts with the club. Therefore the Tuskers signed a three year extension with Denechandra Meitei keeping him at the club till the end of the 2024 season.
The Manipuri fullback is known for his ability to bombard through the left flank and provide assistance to the forward with his crisp crosses. Meetei started his professional career at the FC Pune U-18 team and learned the ropes there but unfortunately never made it to the first team at FC Pune. So he kept roaming around and featured for teams like Ozone FC and Sagolband United. He then joined Churchill Brothers in 2017 and that year in the I_League was his breakthrough year with the Red Machines. Although he left the Goan outfit to join NEROCA, a club closer to his home. But he did not enjoy that much success and hence he shifted sides and joined TRAU FC in the following season. He was one of the only bright sparks for the Red Pythons in a relegation-threatened season as the season was called off due to the increasing case of COVID-19.
His performances impressed the Kerala Blasters management and they did not hesitate one bit before signing him. The 27-year-old is mostly brought in to provide a good cover for the left-back position and he has done that commendable till now and hence the contract extension from the club.
“I had a very good experience with KBFC in my first season despite the difficult conditions. I am sure we will have a much-improved season next year and I am very happy to have extended my contract with the club. Looking forward to meeting the great fan base of the club soon! Stay safe at home,” said Meitei after signing the new contract.
‘Denechandra is physically strong, a solid player for ISL. He needs to improve some angles in his game but he showed a lot of potential last season. I want him to keep wishing to improve and we are here to support him through his journey,” said Karolis Skinkys, the Sporting Director of Kerala Blasters.
It will be interesting to see how much time Meitei gets in the upcoming season. It will also be a very crucial season for the Blasters and for that they need to appoint a new coach first.
