Looking for a new challenge in India, says new ATK Mohun Bagan signing Florentin Pogba

ATK Mohun Bagan created a massive buzz with their new signing as they brought the ‘name’ to Indian football.

They secured the services of Florentin Pogba from French Ligue 2 Sochaux-Montbeliard to strengthen their defence for the upcoming Indian Super League and AFC Cup campaign.

Florentin is the elder brother of French midfielder superstar Paul Pogba but he mostly came to limelight during his stint with Saint Etienne where he also featured in the UEFA Europa League. Back in the 2016-17 season, he went against his brother’s team Manchester United.

Florentin’s arrival to ATK Mohun Bagan gathered a lot of hype as Paul Pogba himself wished his brother luck via instagram. While the fans are in cloud nine, the 31-year-old defender is keeping his feet on the ground. He recently shared his thoughts about joining the Mariners and is well aware about the history and legacy associated with it.

“I’m excited to play for the club! ATK Mohun-Bagan is a legacy club with a massive fan following and this is a proud moment for me personally,” Florentin Pogba said in a club statement. ”Wearing the jersey of this club means taking on a rich culture of football and I can’t wait to play wearing the same!”

The 31-year-old’s career has been mostly in France but he was eager to take a challenge abroad and India was a favourable destination for him. Before this he has also plied his trade in Major League Soccer side Atlanta United where he won titles and gained a lot of applause.

“I’ve come to take on a new challenge in India. It’ll give me the opportunity to learn about a new country, new championships, and new clubs that I feel I will come across. Most importantly, I’m going to represent one of Asia’s most decorated and prestigious clubs. That in itself is a huge honour for me!”

Pogba was very happy to know that Kolkata is a city where people love their football and always turn up in big numbers in the stadium. Therefore he is up for the challenge as he feels that the supporters will only help him raise his game. “The audience and the supporters are the club’s heartbeat. We would love to move forward with their support. I’ve always loved playing in front of a packed stadium. Knowing that I will get the same here fills me with gratitude. I will wait patiently for my turn to play in front of the Green and Maroon fans,” he added.

Florentin Pogba is someone who can lead the defence, hold the backline together and is very comfortable with the ball on his feet. He can help the team build from the back and can initiate quick counter attack with his long passes. Overall his abilities suit the style that head coach Juan Ferrando is looking to play.
