Mohun Bagan Super Giant newly appointed head coach Jose Molina was delighted after team’s thrilling 3-2 win against Durand Cup champions NorthEast United FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday. Molina said players did a great job as they fought till the very end to get the desired result.
Recently, the Highlanders had stunned the Mariners in the Durand Cup final and once again had a 2-1 lead in the Indian Super League fixture.
Biswas and Bose scored the first two goals for the hosts whereas Jason Cummings scored the winning goal for the Kolkata giants. Molina was delighted after getting the first win of the season after a 2-2 draw against Mumbai City FC.
“Yes, it was important to win. Today we achieved our first victory of the season. Really happy,” he said in the post-match press conference.
“Of course I tell sometimes (that) I’m not happy. But today the players did a great job. They fought until the end. They never gave up,” he added.
The Spaniard admitted it is not easy to attack against NorthEast United FC as they defend really well. The home team had 60.4% possession and registered seven shots on target.
“To play against NorthEast United FC isn’t easy because they defend really well.”
“They know exactly what they want to do. They ran really well. They surprised us in the first minutes,” he continued.
The gaffer reckons they could have scored more goals if the players had grabbed their opportunities in both halves of the game.
“We scored three; also, we would’ve scored more because I remember in the first half, for example, a shot from Greg (Stewart), (was) saved by the defender between the sticks on the line.”
“And the players need to put in a great effort. (There are still) Things to do, of course, but they are really happy because we got the three points. I hope the win will give us more confidence in the next matches,” Molina signed off, sharing how this win would boost their confidence ahead of the upcoming games.
