Lionel Messi was delighted after Argentina took one step closer to their ultimate dream of lifting the World Cup. La Albicelete bested Australia by 2-1 at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Saturday to book their quarterfinal clash against the Netherlands.
Lionel Messi, who was playing his 1000th professional match, opened the scoring for his team in the 35th minute as he scored in typical ‘Messi’ style after bamboozling the opposition’s defenders. Julian Alvarez then doubled the team’s lead after a blunder from Australia’s goalkeeper Mat Ryan in the 57th minute.
However, Australia didn’t throw in the towel as Goodwin’s effort from 25 yards found the back of the net after ricocheting from Fernandez.
“One more target has been reached. We are one step closer to our objective,” Messi told a news conference.
“It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be like that. We didn’t have much time to rest and we were worried about that. We knew it was going to be a tough game. They are physically very strong. We were able to get the advantage and then it got complicated. We suffered a bit at the end but it’s the World Cup. All games are difficult.”
Messi, who has now scored nine goals in the World Cup, gave gratitude to the Argentine fans for their unwavering support.
“It was beautiful to be with them,” the 35-year-old forward said. “I think all of Argentina would like to be here, but obviously that can’t happen.
“We are always thrilled to play in front of these fans and it’s great to have their support every match, to feel their joy and passion.”
Argentina came up with a fine collective show against Australia and they would want to continue the good show against the Netherlands. The Sky Blue and White are now only three wins away from glory.
