India Claims Fifth Men’s Junior Asia Cup Title with Thrilling Win Over Pakistan

The Indian junior men’s hockey team emerged victorious in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2024, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in a pulsating final in Muscat, Oman, on Wednesday.

This win secured India’s record-extending fifth title in the tournament, following previous triumphs in 2023, 2015, 2008, and 2004.

Hockey India celebrated the team’s stellar performance by announcing cash rewards of ₹2 lakh for each player and ₹1 lakh for each support staff member. The victory not only marked a successful title defense but also underscored India’s dominance in the junior hockey circuit.

The match began with both teams trading circle entries but failing to break the deadlock by the end of the first quarter. India seized the momentum in the second quarter, with Araijeet Singh Hundal opening the scoring through a powerful drag flick during a penalty corner, finding a gap past Pakistan’s goalkeeper Muhammad Janjua.

India’s relentless pressure paid off again as Dilraj Singh weaved past two defenders and smashed the ball into the board, extending the lead to 3-1. Pakistan responded late in the half with a penalty corner conversion from Sufyan Khan, narrowing the deficit to 3-2.

The third quarter saw intense action, with Araijeet creating opportunities for India, only to be denied by Pakistan’s Janjua, who made spectacular saves. Pakistan capitalized on their penalty corner opportunities, as Sufyan Khan once again showcased his skill, leveling the score at 3-3 heading into the final quarter.

Araijeet’s Hat-Trick Seals the Title

India came out firing in the last quarter, with Manmeet Singh setting up Araijeet for a deft deflection to restore India’s lead. Araijeet completed his hat-trick in style, converting a penalty corner with a precise flick into the top right corner, making it 5-3 with six minutes left on the clock.

Despite Pakistan’s late efforts, including a counter-attack from Zikriya Hayat, Indian goalkeeper Prince Deep Singh stood tall, making crucial saves to deny any further goals. As the final whistle blew, India’s superior strategy and execution secured a historic win.

India’s title-winning campaign in Muscat was marked by relentless attacking play, tactical brilliance, and standout performances, particularly from Araijeet, whose hat-trick was instrumental in the final.

“This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and support staff,” Hockey India said in a statement. “Winning the Junior Asia Cup for the fifth time is a proud moment for Indian hockey.”

India’s win cements their status as a powerhouse in junior hockey and sets the stage for continued success on the international stage.
