Indian Hockey Legend PR Sreejesh Announces Final International Tournament at Paris Olympics

Indian hockey stalwart PR Sreejesh has officially announced that the upcoming Paris Olympics will be his final tournament in international hockey. The 35-year-old, who has been a pillar of strength for the Indian national team, shared his emotional farewell on his X account, reflecting on his illustrious 18-year career.

“As I stand on the threshold of my final chapter in international hockey, my heart swells with gratitude and reflection. This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for the love and support from my family, teammates, coaches, and fans,” Sreejesh wrote.

He reminisced about the sacrifices made by his family, particularly recalling a moment from his childhood. “I still remember my father selling our cow to buy my first kit. His sacrifice ignited a fire within me, pushing me to strive harder, dream bigger,” he added.

Sreejesh debuted for India in 2006 and has since made 328 appearances for the senior side, becoming one of the most celebrated figures in Indian hockey. Known for his agility, sharp reflexes, and leadership qualities, he also served as the team captain, leading India at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The pinnacle of Sreejesh’s career came during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he played a crucial role in securing a bronze medal for India, their first Olympic hockey medal since 1980. “The crowning glory, our Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, was a dream realized. The tears, the joy, the pride – it was all worth it,” he said, encapsulating the emotional significance of that achievement.

Beyond the Olympics, Sreejesh has been instrumental in other major tournaments. He was part of the Indian squad that won silver at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and gold at the 2023 Asian Games. His contributions have not only brought accolades to the team but have also inspired a new generation of hockey players in India.

Sreejesh’s journey from a small town in Kerala to the pinnacle of international hockey is a story of perseverance and dedication. His early years were marked by challenges and sacrifices, but his unwavering commitment to the sport helped him overcome these hurdles and achieve greatness.

As he prepares for his swansong at the Paris Olympics, the Indian hockey fraternity and fans worldwide are gearing up to bid farewell to a true legend. Sreejesh’s legacy will undoubtedly endure, inspiring future generations of athletes. His departure marks the end of an era for Indian hockey, but his influence will continue to be felt both on and off the field.

The Paris Olympics will provide a fitting stage for Sreejesh to conclude his international career, allowing fans and fellow athletes to celebrate his contributions one last time. As India looks to add to its storied hockey legacy, Sreejesh’s experience and leadership will be pivotal in their quest for glory.
