Rocket Mortgage Classic: How Arjun Atwal got to final round

Indian golfer Arjun Atwal ended his journey in the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s final round after returning a one-over 73 to sign off tied 45th.

The veteran who finished with rounds of 70-69-66-73 for a 10-under 278 overall lost his form later, as he started at 11-under, where he recorded three pars and then a bogey-double bogey on fourth and fifth.  In the eight, he managed a 22-foot birdie but missed a few short putts again.

Bryson DeChambeau eventually won the tournament after finishing in the top ten in the first three events of PGA Tour’s ‘Return to Golf.’

DeChambeau (65), after all the hype about his transformation that saw him add 40 pounds to his weight, was in great form throughout as he birdied four of the first seven holes and closed with three in a row. This is his career-best 23-under 265 with a three-shot win that left  Matthew Wolff (71) in second while Kevin Kisner (66) finished third.

The eagle he recorded on 17th after two great shots brought out a smile from the lad after being five feet ahead.

DeChambeau, who had an eagle on each other three days, had a chip-in birdie on the first day. On the second day, a hole-out from 157 yards resulted in an eagle on par-four 12th, which provided the platform for an eagle on par-five seventh on the third day.  It was at the par-five 17th on Sunday.

Speaking after his ouster, Atwal said, considering the long lay-off he had, he still performed well, adding that there were a lot of positives to take from his performance.

Atwal, who best this season was the third round 66 his hoping to improve on his next outing after recording his third cut in nine starts this season.

DeChambeau’s final round of seven-under 65 — capped by a trio of birdies at the end — left overnight leader Wolff (71) in second place.

Having finished in the top ten eight times already in 2020, DeChambeau has been in top-10 in his last seven starts and ended in the top five in five of them.

His amazing putts gave him his first global win since Dubai Desert Classic in January 2019. This is also his first on PGA Tour since Shriners Hospital Open in November 2018.
