World no.1 Novak Djokovic has termed his quarterfinal victory over Kei Nishikori as the best performance of the tournament. The 34 year old Serbian took just an hour and 10 minutes to beat home favourite Japanese Kei Nishikori 6-2 6-0 to book his place in the last four.
Novak Djokovic has never won the Olympic singles gold medal, with a bronze in 2008 his best result at the Games. The six time Wimbledon champion is looking to win his first ever Olympics gold.
Speaking in the post-match performance, the 34 year old Serbian said he is extremely happy with his performance, “I’m very happy, my best performance in the tournament,” said the 9 times Australian Open champion.
Novak is simply amazing in the tournament and states that his level of tennis is getting better and better, “Matches are not getting easier, but my level of tennis is getting better and better. I’ve done that many, many times in my career. I know that I’m (the) kind of player that the further the tournament goes, the better I’m feeling on the court”, further quotes Novak.
Though Djokovic also pointed out the fact that humidity is challenging the players and it is still a kind of struggle to get used to it. “It was fantastic. Playing after five (pm) is completely different. Obviously, there is a little bit of a breeze, but still very, very humid, you sweat a lot, but you don’t have the heat, you don’t have the sun that, in combination with the humidity, is just brutal”, further quotes Novak.
The nine-time Australian champion is now one step closer to a historic ‘Golden Slam’, i.e winning all major four grand slams as well as an Olympics Gold medal in one year. The feat is so coveted that no gentleman has ever managed to do it. The only Tennis player who pulled off the almost impossible task was German legend Steffi Graff, who won all four slams as well as Olympics gold in 1988.
