The World number one Tennis player Novak Djokovic is optimistic of going past Roger Federer’s world number one record. Djokovic defeated young Argentine Diego Schwartzman 7-5, 6-3 to clinch his 5th Italian Open title. This was the 36th ATP Masters title for the Serbian and the triumph has surely helped him strengthen his lead at the top of the ATP rankings.
Furthermore, this was a crucial win for Novak after he was disqualified from the US Open. Novak has now set his eye on going past Roger Federer’s record of staying at the number one rank for a period of 310 weeks.
Meanwhile, Djokovic has completed 287 weeks at the top of the rankings table and he wants to go past Federer’s record. Djokovic has already surpassed former legend Pete Sampras’ record of most weeks at number one position.
The World number one said in the post-match ceremony, “Well, of course, I am aware of the amount of weeks and I don’t know exactly the date but I know it’s going to be in the beginning of the second quarter of next year if I eventually maintain my number one rankings. I am getting closer, in a very good position, I feel like I have been playing really well and being healthy which is great”.
On the other hand, Novak also revealed his other target is to go past Federer’s tally of Grand Slams. Federer has 20 Grand Slam titles under his bag whereas Novak is in third place with 17 titles. Spaniard Rafael Nadal is in second place with 19 titles.
“And I am going to give my all and the very best that I can possibly give in the next period to achieve that and then of course after that obviously the attempt to reach that I am going to focus on slams mostly. Slams will be the big one of course and let’s see I feel confident about myself and I feel confident that I can achieve that goal.”
Novak Djokovic will want to be at his best in the French Open and he is surely one of the favourites along with Rafael Nadal. Novak has won the Roland Garros on a solitary occasion and he would aim to add another title to his bag.
