Former German tennis player Andrea Petkovic hailed Novak Djokovic after the Serbian won the Gold medal at the Paris Olympics. A gold medal at the Olympics was the only missing title in Djokovic’s glittering cabinet and he completed it by beating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the final.
Djokovic didn’t even drop a single set in Paris and came up with a dominating performance throughout the Games. The Serb also lifted his game against Alcaraz, who had beaten him comprehensively in the Wimbledon final.
Meanwhile, Djokovic hadn’t won a single title in the ongoing season before entering the Olympics however he was able to go all the way. The veteran made the most of his experience and he was pumped up after crossing the line in two hours and 50 minutes against the Spaniard.
“Novak Djokovic has shown us what belief can do to turn a season around. He didn’t win a title all year (which is not unusual for anybody else but him) but found his best game to win gold when it mattered most to him. How did he do it? Belief. In himself and God. He was wearing a cross around his neck which he frequently touched before important points,” Petkovic wrote in her newsletter article.
On the other hand, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that the government would honor Novak Djokovic after his Gold medal victory in Paris. Vucic also tipped Djokovic as greater than Rafael Nadal.
“Palma (de Mallorca) has a museum dedicated to Rafael Nadal. We will aim to appropriately showcase the contributions Djokovic has made to our country and simultaneously attract tourists. Novak is greater than Nadal in this magnificent sport,” Vučić said.
After his Olympic glory, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Canadian Open tournament in Montreal.
