Defending champion Novak Djokovic has decided to opt out of the ongoing ATP Finals due to ongoing injury. The Serbian revealed his withdrawal from the last tournament of the year in an Instagram post.
After losing the Shanghai Masters final against Jannik Sinner, Djokovic also didn’t play in the Paris Masters due to injury concerns.
Djokovic wrote in an Instagram story, “I was really looking forward to being there, but due to ongoing injury I won’t be playing next week. Apologies to those who were planning to see me.”
Djokovic is a seven-time Nitto ATP Finals champion and last year bested Jannik Sinner in the summit clash.
“Wishing all the players a great tournament” Djokovic added: “See you soon!”
Djokovic finishes the year with a 37-9 win-loss record. The Serbian didn’t win any Major title this season but won the elusive Gold medal at the Paris Olympics, which was missing from his glittering cabinet.
The ATP Finals qualifiers are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev.
Meanwhile, recently Djokovic said ATP Finals is not at the top of the priority list for him and said playing for Serbia and taking part in Slams is more important for him at the fag end of his career.
“I am not chasing a place on the ATP list, nor the Final Masters. Those are not my goals, honestly. As for me, I finished my career in other tournaments. I don’t know if I will play them in the future or this year. My priorities are playing for the national team and grand slams, everything else is less important,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic will look to be at his best in the Australian Open 2025.
