Rafael Nadal has opted out of the upcoming US Open and has revealed the Laver Cup will be his next event. The veteran Spaniard recently took part in the Paris Olympics. While Nadal suffered a straight set loss in the singles event against arch-rival Novak Djokovic in the second round, he and his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz suffered a 6-2, 6-4 defeat against the American pair of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram in men’s doubles event.
This is the third Grand Slam tournament which Nadal will miss in the ongoing season. He took part at his favorite Roland Garros but lost in the opening set against eventual finalist Alexander Zverev.
Nadal admitted he won’t be able to give his 100% in New York and has withdrawn from the last Slam of the year.
The Spaniard wrote on his X account, “Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories.”
He added, “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”
In the last five years, Nadal has missed US Open on four occasions. He took part in the 2022 edition but lost to local favorite, Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.
This withdrawal further creates doubt on Nadal’s future, which has been hanging by a thin thread in the last 18 months.
