The no.1 seed Daniil Medvedev made a winning start to his Cincinnati Open campaign as he defeated America’s Macenzie Mcdonald convincingly by 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round of the tournament. The Russian recently won his fourth ATP Masters 1000 title as he won the National Bank Open in Toronto by defeating Reilly Opelka in straight sets.
Thus, the 25-year old from Moscow, was able to continue his good form in Western and Southern Open. Medvedev was aware that Mcdonald could have troubled him and he is happy to continue his good form.
“Mackenzie can play well. Everybody who is in the second round of a Masters [1000] can play good tennis, we all know this,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview.
“It’s not easy to go from winning a tournament to another tournament in different conditions. You’re tired physically, especially in the first matches because then you get into the tournament and it gets easier. I’m really happy that I managed to win quite easily. I was fighting a bit more for every point, trying to finish as early as possible.”
Medvedev has been in sublime form as he has won 16 out of his last 18 matches since winning the Mallorca open. The Russian won 96% of his first-serve points against the American as he completely dominated the contest.
In fact, Medvedev had won his maiden ATP 1000 title in Cincinnati back in 2019. The World no.2 has now won seven straight matches at the tournament.
Medvedev will now face Grigor Dimitrov, against whom he holds a 2-1 advantage on Head to Head record. Dimitrov defeated Alexander Bublik by 6-3, 7-5 in the second round. Medvedev admitted that he will face a tough challenge against the Bulgarian.
“He beat two good opponents here. He’s a very tough player,” Medvedev said. “I played him one time in the semi-finals of a Slam. It means something. I need to show my best to try to win this match. Hopefully I will be able to do it.”
