Bronny James, LeBron James’ son, has been making the headlines since he signed a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers selected Bronny James with the 55th pick in the second round of the draft.
Bronny, 19, averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game in his lone season at USC. But he was sidelined for five months after suffering a cardiac arrest.
“Just showcasing what I’ve been putting in the work for this whole summer,” James said while talking to Spectrum Sportsnet. “It’s a lot that I’ve been doing, getting up early mornings. But, yeah, just going out and being aggressive, being myself, and showcasing what I was doing before my incident, and proving myself to the doubters.”
James added he wants to put his name out there and playing with his father was never his focus.
“I’m trying to get my name out for myself,” he said. “I just want to come in and get my work in and get better every day. I never really had a thought of me going to play with my dad. That’s always there to take part of, but it wasn’t a main focus of mine.”
Meanwhile, James signed a $7.9 million deal with the Lakers with a team option for the fourth season. Jeff Goodman said the No. 55 pick in the previous season, Isaiah Wong, who signed a two-way deal, was able to earn in the range of $600-$700 and thus James’ contract is not fair.
However, Nick Wright feels comparing the two contracts is unfair and James will be earning the same amount.
“This is so disingenuous & unfair to the kid involved,” Wright said. “For the record, the 57th & 58th picks of last year’s draft got essentially the same exact deals Bronny just got. Let’s at least try to be fair here.”
