Delhi Capitals vice-captain Axar Patel has shed light on David Warner’s struggles in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023. Though Warner has scored runs in all four matches for Delhi Capitals, the team’s skipper hasn’t been able to score his runs at a brisk pace.
On Tuesday, the southpaw looked for timing like a wanderer looking for water in a desert. The left-hander meandered to 51 runs off 47 balls as he failed to give a quick start to his team.
Warner has scored 209 runs in four matches at an average of 52.25 but his strike rate is below par at 114.84. Thus, Warner hasn’t batted at his absolute best so far in the tournament but Delhi Capitals losing wickets at regular intervals hasn’t helped him too.
Axar Patel said in the post-match press conference, “If you talk about the last two-three games, he is trying, but it’s just not happening for him. I don’t know what he is thinking as a batter at that time. When Prithvi (Shaw) is batting with him, he tries to play the anchor role. When wickets are falling from one end, it’s not good to try and keep attacking from the other end as well.”
Patel added that team’s think tank has had a word with David Warner and he is trying to improve his strike rate.
“Everyone has spoken to him. Ricky (Ponting), (Shane) Watson, Dada (Sourav Ganguly), all have spoken to him about the strike rate and how he can improve. They also saw some videos. They are working on it.”
Meanwhile, DC has got off to a torrid start as they have lost all of their four matches and are tottering at the bottom of the points table. However, Patel feels it is important to stay positive despite the losing spree.
“There are two ways to look at it. If you think that things are going wrong, then it will not help in any way. It will only make matters worse. Winning and losing do matter, but it’s important to stay positive and keep a good attitude. That has been the discussion in the camp.”
The David Warner-led team will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
