It has been one month since India lifted their second T20 World Cup title on that gloomy evening in Barbados. South Africa needed 15 runs off the last over when David Miller smashed a low full toss from Hardik Pandya to long off boundary.
Suryakumar Yadav ran to his left, took the catch, released the ball before going out of the playing area, came back, and completed his catch. The decision was referred to the third umpire and SKY took the most important catch of his career.
India went on to win by seven runs and the Men in Blue were able to break their major ICC title hoodoo after 11 years.
“This will stay with me forever because I’ve done those things in my practise sessions a lot. But I didn’t think that it will come at that moment, World Cup final and that situation. I’m very grateful for that to be doing something special on a special occasion. But yeah, as you said that will remain with me forever. It won’t be a one-month challenge or a one-year challenge. I think it will be for a lifetime,” Suryakumar said in the video on BCCI.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as India’s new T20I skipper after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Hardik Pandya was expected to given the captaincy onus but the all-rounder was ignored by the selectors due to fitness woes.
SKY has kicked off his full-time captaincy stint on a high as India has won the opening two matches against Sri Lanka. The visitors won the opening game by 43 whereas they won the second match by seven wickets (DLS method) to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series.
The third and final T20I of the series between India and Sri Lanka will be played at Pallekele on Tuesday.
