World Cup 2023: There isn’t a selfish bone in his body – Aakash Chopra showers praise on Rohit Sharma

Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has hailed Rohit Sharma’s aggressive batting in the ongoing World Cup 2023. Rohit has led from the front as he has given quick starts to the team in the Powerplay overs.

The right-hander has amassed 503 runs in nine matches of the ODI showpiece at an average of 55.59 and a whirlwind strike rate of 121.50, the best for any top-10 run-getter.

Rohit once again gave a quick start to his team, scoring 54-ball 61 against the Netherlands at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday after opting to bat first.

Chopra was asked if Rohit Sharma should be given credit for the way he has batted and led India in the ongoing World Cup.

The renowned commentator said on his YouTube Channel, “I am with you 100 percent. When you bat at the top of the order, whether you are chasing or batting first, you have the canvas of the entire 50 overs. So you apply small strokes and move ahead if you are making a painting.”

The former India opener added: “Then you can apply bigger strokes later, and no one can stop Rohit Sharma. The circle (field restrictions) and all don’t make a difference to Rohit Sharma. When he hits, the ball goes into the stands. However, there isn’t a selfish bone in his body, the fearless way in which he bats.”

As Rohit has given a quick start in the Powerplay overs, he has eased out the pressure from the middle order. India has scored more than 90 runs in the first 10 overs in three matches of the World Cup and a lot of credit goes to Rohit Sharma.

“In fact, he is doing so well that whoever is going to come from No. 3 to No. 6, does not have to worry at all about the strike rate. However, on a day when they become 25/3, he showed that he can play a cautious knock against England. So Rohit Sharma as a batter – outstanding.”

Chopra also lauded Rohit Sharma for handling his bowlers with guile in the ongoing tournament.

“As a captain, he uses the bowling extremely well. When you have only five bowlers, you feel at times when and if you should use the sixth bowler, but he is absolutely exceptional. It doesn’t work out without a good captain.”

The first semifinal will be played between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai on Wednesday.
